Class Description:

This course immerses students in the culture and craft of linocut - a relief printmaking method.

Students are guided through a brief history of the medium, its unique features versus other printmaking methods, and introduced to historical, contemporary, and emerging artists working in linocut. After familiarizing themselves with tools, materials, and equipment, students will be instructed in proper press operation and best printshop practices. In preparation for the students’ first project, black line and white line carving techniques, drawing strategies, and basic human anatomy will be covered. The class focus lies in utilizing relief printmaking’s binary language and a strong figurative composition to create linocut prints. Once students pull their first proof, they will proceed with planning a comprehensive project that aligns with their artistic goals and ambitions. Group and individualized feedback and instruction, as well as conceptual and technical troubleshooting strategies will be provided.
