Overview

This course will guide students step by step through painting a realistic still life. Using techniques borrowed from the Dutch still life tradition, Zane York will teach the basics of trompe l’oeil (“fool the eye”) painting. The still life will be developed from the initial drawing all the way through the final pass of color. Topics explored include imprimatura, light massing, rounding the form and refinement. A palette of triads will be used to simplify and clarify color mixing. From selecting elements to polishing details, this course is a comprehensive review of realistic still life painting.

  • Learn the method of wipe-out imprimatura to build a monochromatic underpainting

  • Establish the lights of the painting using light massing and velatura glazes

  • Create a chiaroscuro effect by building the shadow shapes and light mass

  • Using the triads, find the local color of each object

  • Explore techniques for creating a Master copy

  • Learn how to refine and round the forms in a second pass of color

Instructor

Zane York deftly walks the line between playfulness and profundity. Drawing inspiration from the inherent strangeness of the natural world, York imbues quotidian scenes with subtle elements of the surreal. His finely detailed renderings offer a view of reality that is ever-so-slightly askew, creating a peculiar sense of balance in accordance with his own set of natural laws. Zane’s images invite us to turn away from the glare of the synthetic world and explore the shifting shadows of the human mind. York received his B.F.A. in Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and his M.F.A. in Painting from the New York Academy of Art. Zane has had solo exhibitions with numerous galleries, museums, and institutions. His works have been exhibited in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver, Melbourne, St. Barthelemy, Florida, and France. He maintains his studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and teaches for the New York Academy of Art and Rhode Island School of Design.
