Class Description:

Students will develop two portrait drawings in graphite, using a variety of tools, techniques, and concepts.

The course will include two six-week poses with a live model. We will discuss and explore different ways in which graphite may be applied and manipulated on paper (pencils, paint brushes, stumps, erasers, etc.) and how these varying strategies may be deployed in service of a full and lifelike drawing. We will focus on building a portrait whose foundations lie in meticulous study of angles, contour and shadow shapes. Value structure and hierarchy will be emphasized, with the goal of creating rich and nuanced volumetric forms through a careful observation of light and shadow. Instructor demonstration will inform student work throughout the course.
