Students will gain exclusive access to study rooms at institutions such as The Met, MoMA, the Whitney, and the Morgan Library, offering a rare behind-the-scenes perspective. We’ll also spend time in the galleries—particularly the newly renovated European Paintings wing at The Met—examining original works up close to foster a direct and personal connection with the art. Our journey will span Eastern and Western art traditions, moving from Byzantine and Renaissance periods through Romanticism and into postmodernism. Using only a sketchbook and pencil, students will explore historical, aesthetic, and philosophical ideas, with drawing used as a tool for observation and reflection. This is not a drawing class, and no advanced drawing skills are required. The focus is not on copying masterpieces, but on deepening understanding of the artist’s process and documenting the experience in a visual journal. The course includes lectures, demonstrations, and conversations about what drawings can reveal about the nature of art and how we interpret it. It’s a rich blend of art appreciation, history, and thoughtful sketching. Due to institutional policies and required authorizations, the detailed class schedule will be released one week before the start of classes.
