Class Description:

A comprehensive approach to beginning, developing and finishing a portrait painting.

This course will include two six-week poses with a live model. Students will develop two portrait paintings from start to finish. We will focus on building a portrait whose foundations lie in careful drawing, with meticulous study of contour and shadow shapes, leading into a thorough observation of color and value. We will consider painting surface (canvas, panel, etc.), if and how to tone a painting surface and the various ways to begin a painting. The course will cover paint handling, color mixing in general, and color mixing for flesh tones. We will discuss mediums (if and when to use them), and strategies for a generally sound painting practice, as well as the value in a systematic approach to painting.
