Class Description:

A progressive approach to classical clay modeling from the live model.

This course provides a progressive approach to classical clay modeling from the live model. This class is intended to develop the student’s own creative vision and sense of rhythmic sculptural form while teaching the basic-to-advanced skills needed to manifest it. Students will sculpt a reclining or seated figure. Open to students of all levels, from beginning to advanced. The instruction in this class is highly individualized; each student is encouraged to work at his or her own pace. Students learn how to create a likeness from observation with the aid of anatomical structure and how to develop the abstract composition of the body. They will grow to understand and control contour in three dimensions, learn to subdivide and resolve organic volume, and achieve dynamism and expression through form. In class, students will consider choices in sculptural finish based upon their goals as an artist. Various finishing techniques and surface treatment will be introduced. Students will have the option to hollow and fire their ceramic sculptures, allowing them to bring home a finished sculpture.
