Class Description:

Learn to draw the portrait in graphite and chalk on toned paper in this two-day online workshop.

Using a photographic reference, students will develop their drawings beginning with a linear block-in phase and ending with a tactile form modeling phase. The linear block-in phase will focus on establishing the gesture, perspective, and proportion of the pose with an emphasis on expression and/or likeness. The modeling phase will focus on creating an accurate and compelling value structure. Block-in strategies, structural anatomy, materials, line quality, and light effect basics will all be addressed. Each session will include critique, lecture, and demo. Questions will be taken throughout. Demos will be both live and pre-recorded.

Anne Herrero

Instructor

Anne Herrero currently lives and works in Missouri. She apprenticed with Norwegian contemporary figurative painter, Odd Nerdrum, at his property on the North Sea in 2014. Her time in Norway continues to influence her work by grounding her practice in a humanist approach. In 2016, Anne moved to New York to train at the Grand Central Academy, where she focused on developing strategies to draw the figure. She earned her MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2020. During Annie’s time at NYAA, she was awarded a two month residency in Leipzig, Germany. This residency was formative to her current drawings and paintings, as she shifted from smaller compositions to larger, more complex images of the figure in the landscape. Anne is the recipient of two Posey Foundation Scholarships, the Grand Central Academy Cast Drawing Scholarship, two NYAA President’s Scholarships, The NYAA Leipzig Residency, and the Eric Fischl Teaching Residency. Anne Herrero’s work is exhibited throughout the United States and in Denmark. Her paintings and drawings are represented in collections in Norway, Ireland, England, Taiwan, Denmark, Sweden, Australia, and the U.S.
