Class Description:

Designed to enhance students' sensitivity to a visual and conceptual understanding of the human figure.

We will explore how our minds perceive the world and develop strategies to accurately interpret what we see, enabling us to create an algorithm that can address various aspects of the human figure and portraiture. The exercises will be broken down into small, manageable parts to ensure everyone can manage the concepts behind the drawing process. Although the class is aimed at beginners, it focuses on refining the fundamental principles that form a solid conceptual understanding of visual space. The techniques and exercises presented in this class are rooted in the experiences of generations of artists, culminating in the methods established during the 19th century. By the end of the class, students are expected to have a deeper understanding of drawing the human figure, along with the autonomy to continue improving their skills independently.

Daniel Castro Gamelas

Instructor

Daniel Gamelas is a sculptor and drawing teacher based in Porto, Portugal. He studied Sculpture at the University of Porto's Faculty of Fine Arts and holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, where he was honored with “The Complete Sculptor Award” for Excellence in Sculpture. His sculptures and drawings delve into the complexities of human relationships and idiosyncrasies within the cultural context of the pre-Roman Iberian Peninsula. Gamelas has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group shows across Portugal, Spain, and New York. Notable projects include “Origins,” “Domains,” “Matriarchal Ceremonies for the Worship of the Most Ancient Deities of Cabeço das Fráguas: Trebopala, Laebo, Trebaruna,” and “Of the Iron Age.” He is also the founding member of the Oporto Atelier of Realist Art (AARP), a school dedicated to upholding the academic tradition of figurative representation.
