Class Description:

This is an introductory course perfect for beginners or intermediate experience level artists interested in discovering the bare bone basics of essential drawing materials and approaches.

The course explores various drawing mediums, materials and their implementation. The course covers drawing surfaces, different types of papers, toned paper preparation methods, mediums including charcoal, graphite, white chalk, color pencils, and pen and ink. Through historical and contemporary examples, we will examine artists using these various materials and provide live demonstrations from the sketch stage to fully completed compositions. Classes 1- 5 will explore a different medium every week. The last class will have a figurative emphasis and offer a longer focused time on a particular medium of the student's choosing.

Meet Your Instructor

Thomas Legaspi

Instructor

Thomas Legaspi is a visual artist focusing on contemporary realism through emotive figurative work. Growing up in New York City, he was fortunate to have been exposed to a tremendous range of arts and culture, but formal training was not readily available to the struggling immigrant family. He started formal training in the arts at St. John's University in 1992, where he would eventually receive his BFA. After working as an illustrator and urban spray paint artist, he turned his attention to Fine Art studies at the New York Academy of Art Graduate School of Figurative Art, where he received his MFA in 2001. He credits this school as a crucial turning point in his career. For over 20 years he has exhibited nationally and internationally through art venues such as Dacia Gallery and Six Summit Gallery in New York City to the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art in Wisconsin, the State Museum of Kazakhstan, and the Blue Moon Gallery in Mongolia. Throughout this time he has also worked as an art educator in various colleges and art schools around the New York metropolitan area.
