Class Description:

An introduction on how to construct an oil painting with indirect painting techniques.

Indirect painting focuses on the Old Master techniques of optical mixing and layering of oil paints. Working on an imprimatura (neutral middle-toned panel or canvas), the painting is developed first with a grisaille (a monochromatic under painting) and then layered with transparent and semi-opaque layers of color. This "indirect" method of applying oil paint is what gives that inner glow to the paintings of artists like Rembrandt, Ingres, and Vermeer, to list just a few.

John Wellington

Instructor

John Wellington received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from The New York Academy of Art. He became a colorist for Marvel Comics, painting such classic graphic novels as the Moebius/Stan Lee Silver Surfer. John has taught traditional oil painting techniques - especially indirect painting (grisaille and glazing) at The New York Academy of Art and privately in his atelier for almost three decades. His paintings have been shown in numerous galleries, art fairs and museums in the United States and Europe. John has lived in France, Italy, and New York City where he currently resides.
