Great Value

Learn a lifelong skill for the price of a trip to the art supply store

Course overview

This course will explore painting a platonic solid still life in monochrome from the initial placement of objects to the final touches of subtle rendering. Learn to create a sense of depth in painting by simplifying the value separation between light and shadow. Starting with the incremental scaffolding of a line drawing, this methodical approach will provide step by step guidance to explore the world of rendering form with value gradation. Practice how to make a two step value statement that will lead to layering bands of value to build forms that have depth and dimension.

  • Construct a simple line drawing

  • Learn the technique of shadow mapping

  • Lay in a two step value scheme

  • Create an initial underpainting in acrylic

  • Make a refined overpainting in oil using value gradation
