Class Description:

Explore still life as a space for technical growth and creative expression, developing color, value, and composition through oil painting from direct observation.

A still life setup can be so much more than a stack of objects. It's a small, self-contained world where an artist can direct light, tension, and mood entirely on their own terms. This course combines technical training with expressive exploration, using oil painting from direct observation to enhance one’s craft and creative voice. Through a series of still life setups, students will develop practical skills in color mixing, value structure, and compositional design. Each session balances skill and creativity, so that technique becomes not an end in itself, but the foundation for a more poetic and individual approach to painting. In six weeks, students will complete three still life paintings that use value, color, and style as a vehicle for self expression.
