Class Description:

Learn to sculpt from observing the model, with an emphasis on finding the gesture and organizing the large volumes of the figure.

Students will be encouraged to think critically about their choices in resolving form in space. The course will begin with short poses and gesture sketches in clay, followed by a long pose lasting a majority of the term. Students will have the option to fire their work in the kiln at the conclusion of the class. A variety of ceramic hand-building approaches will be discussed.

Meet Your Instructor

Liza Little

Instructor

Liza Little is a sculptor based in Queens, NY. She graduated from The New York Academy of Art in 2022 with a MFA in Sculpture and Anatomy. She studied at The Art Students League of New York, and holds a B.S. in Psychology, Biology minor from The City College of New York. Liza is interested in how material properties of ceramic, glass and stone echo the physicality of the human figure. Liza has received several scholarships, including from The Newington-Cropsey Foundation Academy, Penland School of Craft, The Studio at Corning Museum of Glass, and Urban Glass. In 2022, Liza was the Artist in Residence at The West Nottingham Academy, where she taught sculpture for the spring term. She has also taught sculpture in the Summer Undergraduate Residency Program at NYAA. Upcoming exhibitions include the Stanislav Libensky Award Exhibition in Prague, CZ, which features an international roster of emerging glass artists.
