Class Description:

Students will use brushes, paints, inks, rollers, and drawing implements to create unique prints from a Plexiglass plate.

Monotype is a bridge between painting and printmaking. Students are able to explore form and depth using cutouts integrated within the picture plane. The nature of the process allows students the freedom to work experimentally. During this two day course, the class will have a thorough demonstration of materials and the variety of cutout monotypes, and individual work time to create prints to gain a better understanding of the process. The second day will consist of working time, applying the techniques to create final prints which relate more towards their own personal work. A final critique will follow to learn from each other, ask questions, reflect on tips, tricks and obstacles, and the cohort will leave with an understanding of the possibilities which monotype holds.

Alessandro Levato

Instructor

Alessandro Levato, also known as Tommy (they/he) is a trans visual interdisciplinary artist from Lancaster, PA now living in Brooklyn, NY who's work reaches past the bounds of their queer machine body. He uses performative aspects through the mode of production; interweaving painting and printmaking to control the application of image. Fully realizing both the deconstruction and reconstruction of form, the works are direct identifiers of self, pressed and repressed. Alessandro’s education consists of a BFA in Painting at Pratt Institute, a Masters of Science studying Art Law and Business at Christie’s Education and an MFA at The New York Academy of Art. They have received the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant (2019) and The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, Robert Blackburn Printmaking Award (2022).
