Class Description:

This two-day workshop will provide the fundamental and indispensable elements of the structure and anatomy of the head for artists interested portraiture.

The head and face are probably the most rewarding parts of the human figure for an artist to draw or paint. Head and face can also be an intimidating subject because of its inherent complexities. This two-day workshop will provide you with the fundamental and indispensable elements of the structure and anatomy of the head for artists interested portraiture, giving you access to the aesthetic and expressive aspects of this fascinating subject. Working from models, we will practice a variety of drawing techniques. At the beginning of each day, I will also give demos discussing the volumes, proportions and landmarks of the head, the muscles of head and neck, the facial features and their correct positioning in the face, the planes of the head and the effect of the light on the forms of the head.

Roberto Osti

Instructor

Roberto Osti moved to the United States from his native Bologna, Italy in 1992 where he received his Diploma in Art at the State Institute of Art, and his Degree in Anatomical/Surgical Drawing, with honors, at the University of Bologna. In 2007 he received his Masters of Fine Art at the New York Academy of Art where he has also been teaching since 2010. Roberto Osti is the author of the books “Basic Human Anatomy” and “Dynamic Human Anatomy”, both published by The Monacelli Press-Phaidon, and the video “Human Anatomy for the Artist” with Craftsy. His artworks have been exhibited, among other venues, at The Drawing Center NYC), DFN Projects (NYC) Garvey Symon (NYC) Flowers Gallery (NYC), Sloan Fine Art (NYC), Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PA), Gallery of Modern Art in Bologna (Italy), and Museo Palazzo Pogg in Bologna (Italy).
