Class Description:

A progressive approach to classical clay modeling from the live model.

This course builds on Introduction to Portraiture and provides a focus on developed detail and finishing sculpture techniques. It is recommended to take this course after completing Introduction to Portraiture however it is not mandatory. Students will be introduced to detail-oriented sculpture tools, learn cross-form finishing, dual-hand sculpting, and develop a “skin-like” finish. We will dive into how to approach the detailing of features and further capturing the model’s likeness by tightening our sculpt. This class is intended to develop the student’s own creative vision and sense of rhythmic sculptural form. It is optional to sculpt a small full body or a fragment of a sculpture that can be discussed prior to the start date. Students will advance their skills in developing likeness and proportion. Anatomical structure, understanding contour in three dimensions, and expression through form will all be addressed. Custom armature building will be taught to students only participating in Sculptural Realism. Finishing techniques and surface treatment will be focused. Instructor demonstrations and ample work time are provided for students to learn and capture their own creativity. The instruction in this class is highly individualized. Each student is encouraged to work at his or her own pace. Additionally, students will learn how to formally photograph their sculptures. The course is recommended to students at the intermediate-advanced levels in sculpture, but beginners are always welcome.
