Building on concepts introduced in Session I, this course expands into an entirely new technique while working from a live model. Instruction includes a close study of Rembrandt’s methods, with emphasis on toned grounds, wipe-out painting, limited palettes, and light massing to achieve dramatic compositions. Students may choose to develop a single painting from the model over the full six weeks or begin a second work at the halfway point that incorporates modern, highly chromatic pigments. The course also highlights contemporary artists who adapt historical indirect techniques in fresh and innovative ways. *Session I is NOT a prerequisite to sign up for this class. Sessions I and II contain separate methods and can be taken independently.
