Class Description:

In this course we use the scientific knowledge and color-mixing strategies of Landscapes & Light 1 to help us take on some of the most challenging aspects of Landscape Painting.

Each day we will focus on a different challenge. We will learn about cloud types and how to paint their various textures and translucency. We will how to simplify the details of trees and foliage, and how to paint the from the individual leaf, to individual trees, to groups of trees and forest. We will take on the hardest subject of all and learn to paint water: still water and moving water, reflections and shadows, murky water and clear water that reveals a rocky streambed underneath. Finally, we will learn how to bring all of that knowledge together to create a landscape that has all of these challenging topics: clouds, foliage, and water. Our final painting will have all of these elements, and still communicate light, depth, and harmony without overwhelming ourselves or our viewers. The course will consist of lectures, discussion, small studies from provided references, and larger paintings from references of your choosing. Workshop open to beginner to advanced painters working in any full-color media that can layer, such as oils and acrylics or any combination of watercolors, gouache, and pastels. All demonstrations will be done in oil paints.
