Class Description:

This six-week class will address the process of painting a self-portrait using a combination of sources to develop a compelling image that begins with the fundamentals of naturalistic drawing and painting and concludes with an emphasis on character development and image strength.

Participants will initially draw a linear block-in in graphite from a photo that establishes a one-to-one visual equivalence through a strong articulation of gesture, proportion, and perspective. After transferring their block-ins to linen, artists will paint the portrait form by form using both the photo and the mirror. In moving back and forth between optical and conceptual approaches, participants can choose to continue working with a close fidelity to nature or they can introduce more source material and push their self-portraits in narrative or emotive directions through the dramatization of light effect and expression. Anne will offer guidance through demonstrations, critiques, and conversations about anatomy, Munsell color theory, the physics of light, paint handling, and visual hierarchies. Beginner to advanced painters welcome; some previous experience oil painting recommended. Each session will begin with a critique and end with a lecture and demo. Questions will be taken throughout. Demos will be both live and pre-recorded.

Anne Herrero

Instructor

Anne Herrero currently lives and works in Missouri. She apprenticed with Norwegian contemporary figurative painter, Odd Nerdrum, at his property on the North Sea in 2014. Her time in Norway continues to influence her work by grounding her practice in a humanist approach. In 2016, Anne moved to New York to train at the Grand Central Academy, where she focused on developing strategies to draw the figure. She earned her MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2020. During Annie’s time at NYAA, she was awarded a two month residency in Leipzig, Germany. This residency was formative to her current drawings and paintings, as she shifted from smaller compositions to larger, more complex images of the figure in the landscape. Anne is the recipient of two Posey Foundation Scholarships, the Grand Central Academy Cast Drawing Scholarship, two NYAA President’s Scholarships, The NYAA Leipzig Residency, and the Eric Fischl Teaching Residency. Anne Herrero’s work is exhibited throughout the United States and in Denmark. Her paintings and drawings are represented in collections in Norway, Ireland, England, Taiwan, Denmark, Sweden, Australia, and the U.S.
