Course overview

The first element in art is the line. From the initial mark making, lines provide the scaffolding for constructing a convincing, dimensional drawing. This course will provide an exploration of various attributes of the line as well as an overview of basic drawing materials. With detailed exercises including curved and straight lines, contour lines, gesture, hatching and cross-hatching, learn to make drawings that convey shape, weight and form. Lines can be understood as the language to find the rhythm and structure of the subject and this course will provide you with an understanding of lines to develop your own drawing practice.

Rohini Sen

Instructor

Rohini Sen began her art education in New Zealand, already holding a background in zoology. She continued her academic training at several ateliers and academies including Studio Escalier, Grand Central Academy, Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art, and earned a Master of Fine Arts at the New York Academy of Art. Rohini works in several mediums, predominantly in oil paint, graphite, charcoal, and printmaking. She currently teaches at the New York Academy of Art (NYAA) and has taught at the Los Angeles Academy of Art (LAAFA), the City University of New York (CUNY), and Disney Animation Studios. Rohini was awarded the 2020 Kylemore Abbey Global Centre Residency at the University of Notre Dame in Ireland and has collectors in the wider United States, Europe, and the South Pacific.
